Events and Activities

The Fourth of July barbecue at the ski-sloop was an annual event at the beautiful LODGE near Fred’s Little General and Mercantile store. A large pig, with an apple in his mouth, was roasted at an “open pit” and there were many different types of salads, fruits, desserts and drinks. There was country music, dancing on the deck of the lodge, laughter and the delicious barbecue food. The event culminated with fireworks at the highest point of the ski-slope. The children had sparklers. Some people brought blankets and beach chairs even though there were some picnic tables, but not enough to accommodate everyone. However, the town of Beech Mountain opens the Ski Lodge on this special Fourth of July event so that people can go inside to eat as well as outside. At 9:00 P. M. when the fireworks went off it was a spectacular sight.

The New Years Eve Party was held at the Beech Mountain Country Club and was a joyous occasion with good food, music, dancing and great friends. We would go up for two weeks while I was working because that was my winter break. However, when I retired in June 1996, we went to live at Beech Mountain for three years. A lot of the Summer people as they were called would come up for the Winter Sports (skiing and ice skating). The roads were a “sheet of ice” and you had to drive about 10 mph even though the Club was only two or three miles away. I have a happy picture of Phil and I dancing at the New Year’s Eve Party in 1998 at Beech Mountain.

Two field trips in particular that I remember are Jonesboro, Tennessee which is one of the oldest towns going back to the Colonial era. We went sightseeing and had lunch. The other trip was to our neighbor north of us, Abington, Virginia especially to see the BARTER THEATRE. What’s interesting about this theatre is that many famous Hollywood stars used to practice acting in plays, and their audience consisted of the local farmers and their families who could not afford to pay money to see the show, but instead brought fruit and vegetables from their farm. Hence, the name BARTER theatre.
